This strategic town, located in the eastern Donetsk region, has been reduced to rubble after months of relentless Russian shelling, leaving homes and offices charred.
Chasiv Yar, once bustling with a population of 12,000, now stands deserted in the wake of Russian artillery strikes. The town's elevated location makes it a crucial target for Russia, as its capture would pose a threat to nearby cities, compromise Ukrainian supply routes, and bring Russia one step closer to seizing the Donetsk region.
Ukraine's defensive position in Chasiv Yar has been completely obliterated, according to military spokesperson Nazar Voloshyn. He warned of the serious threat of casualties if Ukrainian troops remained in the area. In addition, Ukrainian battalion commander Oleh Shriaiev disclosed that Russian troops outnumber Ukrainian forces by a staggering ratio of 10 to 1. He further revealed that Russia has launched nearly 1,300 strikes, fired almost 130 glide bombs, and conducted 44 ground assaults in the past week alone.
At a recent Central Asian summit in Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that a ceasefire could not be agreed upon due to concerns over Kyiv's response. Putin emphasized the need for clear and irreversible agreements, dismissing the possibility of concluding agreements on Ukraine through mediators.
Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended the efforts of the National Police of Ukraine on Ukraine's National Police Day. Zelenskyy met with law enforcement officers in Kyiv and presented them with state awards for their dedication and bravery. Describing their pivotal role in protecting Ukraine from the occupier and ensuring normalcy in Ukrainian communities, Zelenskyy highlighted the police force's assistance in evacuating people from front-line towns and providing aid to those under Russian fire.
The "White Angels" unit of the Ukrainian police force, as stated by the Ukrainian President's press office, has already saved over 10,000 families and almost 2,500 Ukrainians from dangerous areas near the front line.
The situation in Chasiv Yar remains critical as the Ukrainian army grapples with the advancing Russian forces. With each passing day, the stakes grow higher, and the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict in Ukraine.
