In a series of overnight attacks, Ukraine launched strikes on eight Russian regions with long-range drones, targeting a fuel depot and power substations, according to a statement from a Ukrainian special services source. The attacks were confirmed by the Russian Defense Ministry and are part of an ongoing conflict between the two countries.
The Ukrainian special services source revealed that the attacks were part of a joint operation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Defence Intelligence, and the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The main objective of the attacks was to cripple Russia's energy infrastructure, including facilities supporting the military-industrial sector.
Multiple regions in Russia, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Tula, Smolensk, Ryazan, Kaluga, and even Moscow, were affected by the drone strikes. At least three power substations and a fuel storage facility were damaged and caught fire. Several areas experienced disruptions in power and water supply following the attacks.
Video footage shared on social media depicts the aftermath of drone strikes on a fuel depot in Russia's Smolensk region, which ignited in the early hours of the morning. The Smolensk regional governor, Vasiliy Anokhin, reported that air defense forces successfully shot down the UAVs, but falling debris caused a fire in a fuel and lubricants tank. Crews from Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations were dispatched to respond to the blaze.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defense systems intercepted or destroyed a total of 50 Ukrainian drones within the past day, with one drone being intercepted over the Smolensk region. Aleksandr Bogomaz, governor of the Bryansk region, reported that a downed Ukrainian UAV caused a fire at an energy infrastructure facility. Fire and rescue units from PJSC Rosseti were working to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
Ukraine's recent drone attacks on Russian territory have become increasingly sophisticated. Utilizing drones with longer ranges and advanced capabilities, some integrated with basic artificial intelligence, Ukraine has been able to strike deep into Russian territory, targeting energy infrastructure, oil refineries, terminals, and airfields.
The drone attacks come at a time when the situation on Ukraine's eastern front has worsened significantly, according to the military's top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines are facing increased pressure, having to withdraw from strategic locations or endure heavy aerial bombardment.
Ukrainians are eagerly awaiting a vote in the US House of Representatives that could potentially release nearly $61 billion of military aid for Ukraine. This aid package would include funds to replenish US weapons, stockpiles, and military operations in the region. It is estimated that around $14 billion would be allocated to Ukraine for the purchase of advanced weapons systems and other defense equipment.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, with Ukraine employing drone technology to target critical infrastructure in Russian regions. The international community anxiously watches for any developments that may further influence the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
