Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins quarterback, is expected to be sidelined for the team's next game and possibly longer, according to Coach Mike McDaniel. The decision to hold Tagovailoa out of the game against the Seattle Seahawks rests with the quarterback and his doctor, McDaniel stated on Friday.
Tagovailoa sustained an injury during a collision with Bills safety Damar Hamlin in the third quarter of Thursday night's game against the Buffalo Bills. The impact of the collision left the QB unable to continue, prompting immediate medical attention from both teams.
Coach McDaniel shared that he had a brief conversation with Tagovailoa as he was being taken off the field. He encouraged the young quarterback to prioritize his role as the "starting quarterback of his family" and advised him to take a moment to regroup in the locker room.
Considering the potential absence of Tagovailoa, the Dolphins are actively seeking another quarterback to support their new presumptive starter, Skylar Thompson, and practice squad QB Tim Boyle. McDaniel expressed confidence in Thompson but stated that the team intends to bring in additional support.
The incident garnered attention from Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce, who offered unsolicited advice to Tagovailoa. Pierce mentioned that, considering the previous head injuries suffered by the Miami QB, he would advise him to retire from football for the sake of his long-term health and well-being.
Tagovailoa has a history of head injuries, having experienced two concussions during the 2022 season. However, he rebounded in 2023 and delivered an impressive performance, leading the league with 4,623 passing yards. In recognition of his achievements, the Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a lucrative four-year, $212.4 million contract in July, with $167 million guaranteed.
As the Dolphins prepare for their next game, the team will closely monitor Tagovailoa's recovery and make a decision based on his condition and medical advice. The priority remains the quarterback's well-being, both on and off the field, as the Dolphins seek backup options to ensure a capable replacement in the event of a more prolonged absence.
