A recent poll conducted by Free Press/EPIC-MRA reveals that former President Donald Trump has surged ahead of President Joe Biden in Michigan, with a significant 7-point lead. This marks a substantial increase from just a month ago, where Trump had only a 3-point lead over Biden in the battleground state.

In a two-way race, Trump currently holds a 49%-42% advantage over Biden. When the poll expands to include other candidates, Trump maintains a lead at 43%, followed by Biden at 36%. Other candidates include Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 8%, Green Party hopeful Jill Stein and Cornel West each at 2%. Undecided voters accounted for approximately 9% in both scenarios.

The poll also indicates that Trump holds a lead over Biden in all key regions of Michigan, posing a significant challenge for the President's reelection prospects. Michigan, with its 15 Electoral College votes, is widely recognized as one of the pivotal states in determining the outcome of the presidential election.

Notably, this survey was conducted after the assassination attempt on Trump that took place on July 13. It reveals a notable shift in Trump's lead over Biden in Michigan since the previous Free Press/EPIC-MRA survey in June. Currently, Trump's lead has more than doubled, indicating a growing support base for the former president.

The RealClearPolitics aggregate shows that, on average, Trump currently maintains a 2.1-point advantage over Biden in Michigan in a two-way race, narrowing to 1.5 points in a five-way race. Trump also holds leads over Biden in other key battleground states and national matchups, according to RCP.

Saturday saw Trump holding his first major rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after being officially crowned as the Republican nominee for president at the Republican National Convention. Vice presidential nominee JD Vance (R-Ohio) joined him on the campaign trail.

Calls from nearly three dozen congressional Democrats for Biden to step aside due to concerns about his age and ability to compete with Trump have intensified. The poll indicates that 46% of Democrat voters believe Biden should step aside, while 43% oppose the notion, with 11% remaining undecided. Among Republicans and Independents, 55% believe Biden should step aside, while 32% disagree.

The poll also highlights the top concerns among voters in Michigan, with 31% citing inflation, 17% immigration, and 12% abortion as key issues influencing their decision-making.

An interesting finding from the survey reveals that many voters were unfamiliar with the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, a transition plan proposed by the ultra-conservative group in the event of Trump's victory. Biden's campaign and Democrats have criticized the proposal, branding it extreme and highlighting its aim to dismantle portions of the government. Only 27% of respondents said they were somewhat familiar with Project 2025, while 15% claimed to be very familiar, and 57% admitted they did not know much about it.

President Biden, despite recovering from COVID, plans to resume his campaign trail this week. The poll, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, was conducted from July 13 to 17, coinciding with the same day Trump survived the assassination attempt.

"The Democrats are in a difficult position," commented EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn to the Free Press, emphasizing that the widening lead for Trump will add pressure on Biden to consider a replacement candidate.
