In a devastating incident that occurred on Sunday night in Salina, two dedicated law enforcement officers lost their lives in a heartbreaking shootout. Syracuse Police Officer Michael E. Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Hoosock were fatally shot, alongside the suspect, in the incident that unfolded in a quiet suburban neighborhood.
The shootout took place at approximately 8:51 p.m. on Darien Drive in Salina. Both officers and the suspect were struck by gunfire during the exchange. Lt. Hoosock, who had selflessly responded to assist in the investigation, was tragically killed while in the backyard of a neighboring house. Sheriff Toby Shelley revealed during a press conference that Lt. Hoosock attempted to seek shelter behind a maple tree but was shot by the suspect, Christopher R. Murphy, who was standing on a deck.
Officer Jensen was killed when the suspect moved from the backyard to confront the police officers stationed in the front of the house. Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile described Officer Jensen as ambitious and hard-working. He had recently graduated from the Syracuse Regional Police Academy in August 2022 and had been on the force for 2 1/2 years.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, Christopher R. Murphy, a 33-year-old resident of Salina, was killed in the ensuing gunfight. Murphy was armed with a Springfield AR-15 gun during the incident. It remains to be determined whether Murphy legally possessed the weapon.
Lt. Hoosock, a dedicated officer with a stellar career, had been a member of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office for 16 years. He had served in various roles, including deputy sheriff sergeant, detective sergeant in the criminal investigations division, and bomb squad commander for the sheriff's office. Lt. Hoosock also had a background as a firefighter and paramedic, volunteering with the Lyncourt Fire Department and Moyers Corners Fire Department.
The tragic event began with a routine traffic stop in Syracuse's Tipp Hill neighborhood at 7 p.m. The driver of the vehicle refused to comply and sped away at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Police were able to obtain the license plate number, leading them to the home on Darien Drive. Upon spotting guns inside the car, law enforcement officers heard the sound of a weapon being prepared for use from within the residence.
Further investigations are being conducted to determine the motive behind Murphy's actions. Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile hinted at something in Murphy's past that may have contributed to this tragic event. However, he declined to provide specific details at this time. Murphy's only prior interaction with law enforcement was a 2014 drunken driving arrest, which included a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.
The Syracuse community is left reeling from the loss of these two dedicated officers. Lt. Hoosock leaves behind a devastated family, including his children, and Officer Jensen's ambition and commitment to public service were cut short. The entire law enforcement community, as well as the public, mourn the loss and offer their condolences to the families affected.
Authorities have completed the initial processing of the scene and intend to examine the house in further detail on Tuesday. Additionally, Shawn Kinsella, who was allegedly with the suspect during the incident, was apprehended while attempting to flee over a fence. As of now, Kinsella has not been charged with any crime.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day in their noble duty to protect and serve the community. As the investigations continue, the community stands unified in support of all those affected by this senseless act of violence.
