EAGAN, Minn. — After a grueling 315-day recovery period from a devastating knee injury, T.J. Hockenson is set to reclaim his role as the Minnesota Vikings' premier tight end this Sunday night. Hockenson, who tore two ligaments in his right knee last season, confidently declares himself "bigger, stronger, and faster than ever," thanks to advanced rehabilitation technologies employed by the Vikings during his recovery.

Despite Hockenson's optimistic return, the Vikings' offense has undergone significant changes in his absence. Adapting to a shift from quarterback Kirk Cousins to Sam Darnold, the team has leaned heavily on receiver Justin Jefferson and running back Aaron Jones. This strategic alteration has resulted in the Vikings recording the NFL's fewest pass attempts per game at 27.1 and an increased focus on designed runs by 24% over the past two seasons.

Tight ends have seen notably less action, with an average targeting rate of just 4.0 times per game, the second-lowest in the NFL. This cautious and recalibrated approach has enabled the Vikings to outperform expectations, winning five of their first seven games despite the offense running an average of 56.7 plays per game, the lowest rate in the league.

Darnold’s gameplay, marked by holding the ball an NFL-high 3.1 seconds before throwing, has contributed to some limitations in the Vikings' offense. However, Hockenson's return is expected to bring a significant shift. Known for his skill as a midrange pass catcher, his presence could help spread the field more effectively than backups Johnny Mundt and Josh Oliver.

Vikings' coach Kevin O'Connell expressed enthusiasm about integrating Hockenson’s unique skill set back into the game plan. Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips highlighted Hockenson's ability to create mismatches against safeties and linebackers and his value in both the passing and running games.

Acquired during the 2022 season, Hockenson quickly became a cornerstone of the Vikings' offense, receiving an average of 8.56 targets per game before his knee injury. His productive output included catching 155 passes for 1,479 yards and eight touchdowns over a 25-game span, placing him among the elite tight ends in the NFL.

Recovery from the injury, sustained in Week 16 last season, was meticulously managed. After initially delaying surgery to allow the MCL to heal, Hockenson underwent ACL surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, beginning a nine-month recovery that culminated in his return this week.

Throughout his rehab, advanced RFID technology tracked his on-field movements, ensuring his recovery was closely aligned with team activity levels. The Vikings also leveraged video analysis to help Hockenson build confidence and monitor progress.

Reflecting on his journey, Hockenson emphasized the importance of patience and the invaluable support from the Vikings' medical staff who prioritized his long-term well-being. Now, fully prepared and cleared, Hockenson is eager to help his team, bringing an end to a challenging but transformative period in his career.
