In a significant development, Sweden has taken a step towards potentially supplying Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets, signaling that their transfer remains on the table. Although Ukraine's immediate priority lies in acquiring more F-16s, the Gripen jets could play a crucial role in the future.

The JAS 39 Gripen, known for its maneuverability and versatility, has the ability to perform offensive and defensive operations. Equipped with a range of weapons, including air-to-air missiles and guided bombs, the Gripen jets provide a formidable asset. However, unlike the F-16s, the quantity of Gripen jets is limited.

Sweden's Defense Ministry recently announced the inclusion of Gripen jet spare parts in its military aid package to Ukraine, valued at $443 million. This move ensures that several JAS 39C/D jets are saved from being dismantled and could potentially be considered for a future donation to Ukraine.

While immediate talks on supplying Gripens to Ukraine are on pause, it is clear that the Swedish government is acquiring the necessary components to make the jets combat-ready. Currently, there are only around 20 Gripen jets that Sweden can realistically provide to Ukraine.

The Swedish Defense Ministry emphasized that transferring Gripens to Ukraine is not viable at the moment due to the ongoing prioritization of F-16 fighters. However, they expressed willingness to prepare the conditions for a potential future transfer. The decision will be dependent on maintaining Swedish security and Ukraine's readiness to receive Gripen fighters, requiring cooperation with other countries.

Former Swedish pilot and Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Wilson stated that acquiring spare parts for Gripen jets is a preparation for their potential transfer to Ukraine in the future. While Sweden currently possesses 96 Gripens, not all of them are combat-ready, suggesting that only a portion of them could be launched initially.

It is important to note that the effectiveness of the jets lies not only in their capabilities but also in the weapons they carry. Ukraine has been pressing Western allies for more long-range weapons, including missiles fired from land and aircraft. The UK and France have already provided Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, while talks with Washington for the supply of such missiles are in advanced stages.

Ukraine continues its efforts to enhance its military capabilities, including the acquisition of high-class Western fighter jets. The potential transfer of Gripens, described as the "pride of Sweden" by President Zelensky during his visit in 2023, could provide Ukraine with a crucial advantage in countering a well-equipped opponent.

Aviation experts agree that both Gripens and F-16s belong to the same class of aircraft, but Gripen's ability to take off from shorter runways gives it an advantage. Furthermore, the Gripen requires less time on the ground and has a longer fly time, making it a valuable asset for defense operations.

Pilot skills play a vital role in the effectiveness of the jets, and coordination with other defense forces is essential. While the immediate focus remains on F-16s, the potential transfer of Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine in the future could significantly enhance Ukraine's capabilities in defense and security operations.
