In a significant development, suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is anticipated to be charged with an additional murder later this week, as per a report by Newsday. Heuermann, aged 60, has pleaded not guilty to the killings of four women whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach along Ocean Parkway. The victims include Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

The news of the forthcoming indictment comes after extensive searches were conducted by the Gilgo Beach Task Force at Heuermann's residence in Massapequa Park and a wooded area in Manorville, where the remains of two women had previously been found. The recent search of Heuermann's home specifically focused on the basement area.

ABC News Contributor Robert Boyce shed light on the situation, stating, "They do a nine-day search and then they go back to his house the last week of May and do a six-day search as the Massapequa Park house, so now 10 days later, here we got with an indictment -- a sealed indictment to hopefully be opened Thursday."

Among the victims discovered in Manorville were Valerie Mack, whose dismembered remains were found in November 2000, and Jessica Taylor, whose dismembered remains were located in the same wooded area in July 2003. Partial remains of Taylor were also found on Gilgo Beach in March 2011, while additional remains of Mack were discovered in April 2011, although her identity was not confirmed until May 2020.

The recent focus of investigators has been on Heuermann's basement, particularly a vault where guns were reportedly stored, as well as a small room. Attorney Bob Macedonia, representing Heuermann's ex-wife Asa Ellerup, commented on the search, stating, "The primary focus again in that basement, in that vault where the guns were kept and also that little room."

The potential connection between the recently found remains and Heuermann is now being examined. Boyce speculated, "Looking at these cases and I'm looking at these two ladies now, is this part of that? It seems to be."

Originally scheduled for a court appearance on June 18th, Heuermann is now expected to face arraignment on the new charge this Thursday.

The ongoing investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders continues to uncover new evidence, bringing hope for justice for the victims and their families.
