In a shocking incident over the weekend, a mass shooting took place in the Short North area of Columbus, Ohio, leaving 10 people injured. The suspect believed to be connected to the shooting, DeAngelo Fuller, 19, turned himself in to the police on Sunday night after a high-speed chase.
According to court documents, the shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near the 1200 block of North High Street. The victims, all males between the ages of 16 and 27, included two juveniles and eight adults. One victim remains in critical condition, while the other nine are in stable condition.
After responding to the scene, police noticed a possible suspect fleeing on foot and entering the passenger side of a white Honda Civic. Authorities attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver of the Honda refused to cooperate. This initiated a high-speed chase, with the suspect driving at speeds of up to 110 mph on Interstate 670 West and even going against the flow of traffic on a one-way street.
Despite their efforts, police were unable to apprehend the suspect as he evaded capture and exited the Grandview Avenue ramp on I-670. Later that day, however, DeAngelo Fuller voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities at the police headquarters. He admitted to not stopping during the pursuit.
On Monday morning, Fuller faced a judge at an arraignment hearing where he was charged with obstructing official police business. He was issued a bond of $100,000 and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 2.
This incident marks the third mass shooting in the Short North neighborhood in just over a year. In May 2023, 10 people were shot in two separate shooting incidents, resulting in the recovery of 11 firearms by the police.
In response to the recent tragedy, Columbus City Council has issued a statement expressing their anger and outrage. They have vowed to remain vigilant during the summer and consider implementing additional safety measures across the city. The council has also urged state government and courts to support common-sense gun control policies to prevent firearms from flooding the streets.
Columbus police are requesting residents with any information or tips regarding the incident to come forward by calling 614-645-3473 or contacting Central Ohio Crime Stoppers. The investigation into the mass shooting is ongoing as the community grapples with yet another senseless act of violence.
