In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris selecting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, social media quickly began speculating about who could portray Walz on the upcoming season of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). One name at the top of the list was legendary actor and comedian Steve Martin. However, Martin has politely declined the offer extended to him by "SNL" producer Lorne Michaels.

Martin's uncanny resemblance to Walz, with his wispy white hair, glasses, and genial demeanor, caught the attention of fans and led to online discussions about his potential casting. Taking to the social media platform Threads, Martin added fuel to the fire when he jokingly shared, "I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short."

It seems Michaels was listening closely as he wasted no time reaching out to Martin with an official offer on Wednesday morning. However, the comedian swiftly declined, citing his lack of experience as an impressionist. Martin expressed, "I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no. I said, 'Lorne, I'm not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.' I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses."

While Martin won't be taking on the role of Governor Walz, fans can still anticipate the return of Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris. Rudolph, who previously portrayed Harris on "SNL" during the 2019 Democratic presidential primaries and when Harris was announced as Joe Biden's running mate, will be reprising her acclaimed portrayal. (Jim Carrey had portrayed Joe Biden.)

In an effort to commit to the role, Rudolph had moved the production of the third season of her Apple TV+ series "Loot" from August to January. However, Martin, who will be celebrating his 79th birthday next week, wasn't prepared to make such a long-term commitment. "It's ongoing," Martin explained. "It's not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They're gonna find somebody really, really good. I'd be struggling."

As the new season of "Saturday Night Live" approaches, fans eagerly await the announcement of who will be stepping into the shoes of Governor Tim Walz, to join Maya Rudolph in the show's political sketches. While Steve Martin won't be part of the cast, his resemblance to Walz didn't go unnoticed, sparking a conversation about potential celebrity impersonations on SNL.
