Amid a surge of suspected overdoses in downtown Austin, private security guards hired by a group of businesses have stepped up to administer Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. As of Wednesday, Austin-Travis County EMS reported responding to approximately 70 cases, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives.

According to Nxt Lvl Security, the private security firm responsible for patrolling a section of Sixth Street, they have administered 23 doses of Narcan to 16 individuals since the beginning of the week. Monday was noted as the busiest day for the security guards, who typically administer Narcan to only 1-5 people with 1-2 doses on a regular week.

Austin-Travis County EMS expressed gratitude towards private security groups for carrying Narcan, as it has contributed to saving lives. In some instances, patients have already begun to wake up by the time EMS arrives, thanks to the timely administration of Narcan. However, it is important to note that many overdose cases require multiple doses of Narcan, and EMS personnel often administer subsequent rounds.

The substances causing these overdoses are not limited to opioids. ATCEMS Captain Christa Stedman highlighted that synthetic cannabinoids (K2), crack cocaine, Xanax, and various other substances appear to be involved. The broad availability of these harmful substances poses a significant challenge in combating the ongoing crisis.

Nxt Lvl Security was hired by downtown businesses last year to address the issue of illegal drug activity and unruly behavior in the area. Due to staffing shortages at the Austin Police Department, private security patrols were introduced as a means of maintaining constant security in the area. The primary objective was to deter drug-related incidents and protect the businesses operating in the vicinity.

The Austin Police Department has confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent surge in overdoses, though further details are awaited.
