In a TV address from his official compound in Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared on Monday that he will not resign, despite the ongoing probe against his wife, Begoña Gomez. Last week, the Madrid regional Superior Court of Justice initiated an investigation into Gomez for alleged influence peddling and business corruption, following a complaint from the organization Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), which has ties to the far-right.

Sanchez, a socialist leader, expressed his determination to continue leading the Spanish government with even more strength, intensifying his fight against what he called "unfounded" attacks. He condemned the corruption complaint against his wife, attributing it to conservative and far-right forces. "This is not an ideological question. It's a question of dignity and defines us as a society," asserted the 52-year-old prime minister.

The controversy surrounding Gomez has stirred up a long-standing campaign against the couple, which Sanchez revealed has been ongoing for the past decade. Despite the persistent attacks, he expressed gratitude to his Spanish Socialist Party members for their unwavering support.

The decision not to resign comes after prosecutors presented an appeal to the judge, requesting the closure of the case against Gomez. The complaint from Manos Limpias was based on alleged information published by right-wing and far-right digital media, as acknowledged by the organization itself. It will now be up to the judge to determine the veracity of this information.

Sanchez's determination to remain in office has garnered both support and criticism. Salvador Illa, the Socialist Party candidate for president of the Catalan region, hailed the prime minister's decision as a courageous move to restore the dignity of politics. In contrast, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, leader of the conservative Popular Party, emphasized that the crisis preceding this announcement is part of a prolonged period of instability.

Since assuming office in 2018 after winning a no-confidence vote, Sanchez has faced numerous challenges. Despite the setback in regional and local elections last year, he managed to form a coalition government with the leftist Podemos party. Sanchez's government has been recognized for its progressive agenda on women's rights and a newly implemented euthanasia law. However, these reforms have also led to backlash in certain areas of the country, particularly regarding concerns over the unity of Spain amidst growing separatist sentiments.

Public support for Sanchez was evident as thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Madrid over the weekend, urging him to stay in office. The retention of the prime minister is seen by many as vital for the preservation of democracy and the continuation of social advancements achieved under his leadership.

As the probe against his wife continues, Sanchez remains resolute in his commitment to govern, determined to weather this storm and uphold the dignity of politics in Spain.
