Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was targeted in an assassination attempt last week, is no longer in immediate danger but remains in a serious condition, according to his deputy. Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak provided an update on Fico's health during a news conference outside the hospital in Banska Bystrica, where the prime minister is being treated.
Fico, 59, was shot four times on Wednesday, causing shockwaves across Europe. The attack highlighted the polarized state of politics in Slovakia, a country with a population of 5.4 million. Kalinak stressed that although the prime minister's condition had slightly improved, it was still too serious to consider transferring him to a hospital in the capital.
However, Kalinak expressed relief that the worst fears had passed for now. He stated, "We are all a little calmer. When we were saying that we want to get closer to a positive prognosis, then I believe that we are a step closer to that. The prime minister has stepped away from his life being in danger, but his condition remains serious and requires intensive care."
The assassination attempt on Fico is the first major attack on a European political leader in over two decades, drawing international condemnation. Political analysts and lawmakers are concerned that this incident reflects a growingly polarized and tense political climate, not only in Slovakia but across Europe.
Meanwhile, the suspect identified as Juraj C. has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody. The Slovak Specialized Criminal Court made the decision on Saturday to keep the suspect detained pending further investigations.
As Slovakia and the international community continue to closely monitor Fico's condition, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks facing political leaders and the urgent need to address the growing political tensions that have gripped Europe in recent years.
