In Long Beach, New York, a shooting near the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station has prompted a police investigation. At least one person was injured and was treated at a local hospital, with police stating that the individual was conscious upon leaving the scene. However, the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening around 6 p.m. as approximately 2,000 young adults had gathered on the boardwalk. According to Long Beach Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma, the gathering appeared to be a social media event, possibly related to Senior Cut Day, with numerous schools present at the beach. Disputes among the group reportedly led to the police being called for assistance in dispersing the crowd.
As the group was being dispersed around 7 p.m., multiple shots were fired near the LIRR Long Beach station, causing panic and chaos among witnesses. "All we see is the cops come, like, really fast down the block. And all you hear is like the first shot -- boom. Then you hear, like, seven more go off. Boom, boom, boom," said one witness. Another witness mentioned that the incident started as a fight before escalating into gunfire, resulting in them fleeing the scene.
Two individuals have been taken into custody by the police in connection with the incident. The Long Beach Police are heading the investigation, aided by the Nassau County Police and MTA Police. In light of the ongoing investigation, LIRR service between Long Beach and Island Park was temporarily suspended, with normal service restored late on Thursday night. Commuters are advised to consult the MTA's website for the latest updates on service disruptions.
The motive for the shooting and the identities of those involved have not been disclosed at this time. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
