In a campaign rally held in Detroit, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz of evading his military service and misleading the country about his veteran status. The accusation was in response to Walz's attempt to portray Vance as a member of the elite who attended an Ivy League school.
Vance vehemently defended his background, highlighting his modest upbringing in a poor family and his journey of working his way through college and law school. He expressed disappointment with Walz's attempt to diminish his accomplishments, stating that his story embodied the American dream.
The Ohio senator then launched into a scathing attack on Walz's military service, drawing attention to his decision to drop out of the Army when his unit was called to serve in Iraq. Vance claimed that Walz's choice to abandon his unit and allow them to deploy without him had garnered criticism from fellow service members.
Expressing his outrage, Vance declared that it was shameful to prepare a unit for deployment, promise to follow through, and then step away right before action was required. He emphasized the importance of serving one's country when called upon to do so, citing his own honorable service in the United States Marine Corps.
Vance also called out Walz on his stance regarding gun control, accusing him of using his questionable military history to advocate for stricter firearm regulations. He questioned Walz's statement that certain weapons used in war should not be found on American streets, raising doubts about the governor's personal experience in combat zones.
The senator expressed his concern over what he referred to as "stolen valor," criticizing Walz for allegedly misrepresenting his military service and using it for political gain. Vance called upon reporters to hold both Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris accountable.
It is worth noting that Vice President Harris has not taken any questions from the press since President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed her candidacy, a lapse that Vance highlighted in his address.
As the campaign trail heats up, accusations and counter-accusations are common in the political landscape. The claims made by Vance against Walz regarding military service and the governor's response will undoubtedly fuel ongoing debates and discussions as the election approaches.
