In the past 48 hours, Russian forces have sustained significant casualties and suffered losses in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, with over 2,500 fighters, 200 vehicles, and more than 100 artillery systems being reported as lost, according to figures released by Ukraine's military.
The Ukrainian General Staff indicated that between Saturday and Sunday, Russia lost 1,320 fighters. Additionally, since Saturday, Moscow has lost 15 tanks, 47 armored personnel vehicles, 162 other vehicles, and fuel tanks. Ukraine also reported that 108 artillery systems were lost by Russia in the same period.
It is important to note that the casualty figures and battlefield losses provided by Ukraine have not been independently verified, and Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.
Both Russia and Ukraine often do not openly acknowledge the full extent of their losses and casualties during the conflict. While exact figures regarding Ukraine's losses are not clear, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that 31,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed in two years of war. Russia, on the other hand, claims that Ukraine's death toll is much higher, alleging that Kyiv lost 215,000 soldiers in 2023 alone.
Despite Russia's gains in eastern Ukraine, Western intelligence and experts suggest that many Russian soldiers currently on the front lines have limited training and may struggle to carry out complex operations.
In early May, Russia launched a cross-border offensive into Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, aiming to divert scarce resources from Ukrainian positions along the eastern front. By the end of the month, it was estimated that Russia's total casualties had reached 500,000.
According to the British Defense Ministry, Russia likely sustained over 70,000 casualties during the combined months of May and June. The ministry evaluated that Russia's casualty rate will likely average above 1,000 a day over the next two months as they continue their attempts to overpower Ukrainian positions.
Ukraine has claimed that Russia is capable of incorporating up to 30,000 new soldiers each month to replenish their heavy losses, which approximately matches the number of casualties reported in Moscow's military every month.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides facing significant losses and casualties. The situation on the ground remains volatile, and accurate casualty counts and battlefield losses are often difficult to ascertain.
