In a recent overnight assault, Russia launched a new barrage of missiles and drones on Ukraine, targeting energy facilities and causing significant damage. Ukrainian officials in Kyiv confirmed the attack, stating that the strikes injured at least two workers and resulted in further complications for the country's energy supply.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has left the latter struggling with a new wave of rolling blackouts, as relentless Russian attacks on energy infrastructure continue to impact the country. Having started three months ago, these attacks have already crippled half of Ukraine's power generation capacity.
During this eighth major attack on energy facilities, Russia fired a total of 16 missiles and deployed 13 Shahed drones, according to the Ukrainian air force. However, Ukrainian air defenses were able to intercept 12 of the 16 missiles, successfully neutralizing the threat.
The state-owned power grid operator, Ukrenergo, reported that the strikes severely damaged equipment at facilities in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia and the western region of Lviv. In the aftermath, a fire broke out at an energy facility in Zaporizhzhia, resulting in the injury of two workers.
As the conflict persists and sees no significant changes along the front line, both Russia and Ukraine have increasingly targeted infrastructure, aiming to disable each other's capabilities in the ongoing war that has now entered its third year.
Following the latest attack by Russia, Ukraine retaliated with military strikes on three oil refineries in southern Russia overnight into Friday. As a response, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that their air defenses successfully destroyed five drones over the Sea of Azov, as well as in the Bryansk and Smolensk regions.
The regional governor of Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, reported that a man was killed in the shelling. Meanwhile, the governor of Ukraine's partly occupied Donetsk region revealed that Russian attacks claimed the lives of five people and injured seven individuals the previous day. In the Russia-controlled part of the Donetsk region, three deaths and four injuries were reported due to shelling by Ukrainian forces on Saturday morning.
In a separate incident, the Ukrainian National Police reported that a policeman was killed in the partly occupied region of Kherson as a result of a Russian drone attack on a checkpoint.
As both sides engage in intensified attacks, the situation remains volatile and threatens to exacerbate the existing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The international community continues to monitor the conflict closely, with hopes for a peaceful resolution being of utmost importance.
