In a fresh local offensive in the embattled Donetsk region, Russia has seized control of another village as it continues its push towards the city of Toretsk. The latest territorial gain comes as Moscow's forces have been advancing towards the north-western city of Gorlivka, which has been under separatist control since 2014.
The city of Toretsk, situated to the north-east of Gorlivka, had previously been spared from intense fighting. However, recent weeks have seen a shift in the security situation, following the unexpected advancement of Russian forces, catching Ukrainian forces off guard.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian forces have successfully liberated the settlement of Shumy, resulting in a better tactical position for their troops. Shumy, located less than 10 kilometers east of Toretsk, is a mining town that had a population of approximately 32,000 prior to the outbreak of war.
The Ukrainian forces have been particularly vulnerable since the end of 2023 due to significant delays in the delivery of arms from European and US sources. This has left them at a disadvantage, making it challenging to counter the advancing Russian forces effectively.
Russia's continued push towards Toretsk raises concerns about the stability and security of the region. The situation highlights the urgent need for international intervention to reach a peaceful resolution and de-escalate the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
As tension persists in the area, the independent news source, The Moscow Times, faces its own battle against the Russian government.
