In a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, both nations expressed their commitment to deepening their strategic cooperation on the world stage. Lavrov expressed his gratitude to China for its support following President Vladimir Putin's recent re-election, in which he faced no significant opposition.
Lavrov acknowledged that President Xi Jinping was among the first to offer congratulations, emphasizing the importance of the bilateral relationship between Beijing and Moscow. Wang echoed this sentiment, stating that China and Russia would continue to provide each other with strong support. He praised the leadership of President Putin and expressed confidence in a bright future for the Russian people under his guidance.
This meeting comes on the heels of Lavrov's visit to Beijing in October, where both countries participated in an international forum on China's Belt and Road infrastructure initiative. However, experts have noted the growing influence of China in the relationship, especially considering Russia's international isolation resulting from its invasion of Ukraine.
Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, highlighted the asymmetrical nature of the relationship, stating that China possesses stronger bargaining power and more options than Russia. He argued that Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on China, particularly for necessary materials to sustain its war efforts.
The United States has been cautious of China indirectly aiding Russia's military activities, urging Beijing to use its influence to facilitate peace in Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently cautioned China against supporting Russia's defense industry, while Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen raised concerns about China's assistance in Russia's military procurement.
Despite these warnings, Lavrov drew a parallel between Western sanctions and the limitations imposed on China's access to sensitive U.S.-made technologies. He accused the West of impeding China's economic and technological development to eliminate competition. In response, Wang affirmed that both China and Russia stand together on critical matters, advocating for historical progress, fairness, and justice.
China's commitment to peace and stability was emphasized by Wang, who stated that China would act as a force for constructive engagement on the international stage, opposing hegemony, tyranny, and bullying. He further added that China would actively pursue a common future for all humankind.
As both Russia and China face challenges on the global stage, their reaffirmed commitment to strategic cooperation aims to strengthen their positions and tackle international issues together.
