Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, the first African American and first woman to hold the position, has sadly passed away at the age of 73. Yarbrough had been hospitalized last week for an undisclosed medical condition and her passing was confirmed by one of her top aides.

In a statement from her office, it was revealed that Yarbrough had been undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition, although no further details were provided. She passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, surrounded by her husband and family.

Yarbrough's family released a statement, describing her as not only a dedicated public servant but also a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and mentor to all who knew her. Her legacy and the paths she paved were acknowledged, with many standing on her shoulders and continuing her work.

Throughout her three-decade-long career in local and state politics, Yarbrough made a significant impact. Prior to becoming Cook County Clerk in 2018, she served as the Cook County Recorder of Deeds from 2012 to 2018. In 2020, the two offices merged under her leadership, further streamlining vital record operations in the county.

Before her role as Recorder of Deeds, Yarbrough represented parts of the western suburbs as an Illinois state representative from 2001 to 2012. Her dedication to public service and commitment to her community earned her respect and admiration.

Governor JB Pritzker expressed his condolences, describing Yarbrough as a good friend. The loss of Yarbrough was also acknowledged by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, and Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs, all recognizing her as a trailblazer and committed public servant.

Following her passing, the Cook County Clerk's office released a statement, stating that operations would resume under Chief Deputy Clerk Cedric Giles. However, a long-term and permanent replacement for Yarbrough has yet to be determined.
