### Kentucky State Senator Johnnie L. Turner Dies After Lawn Mower Accident

Kentucky state senator Johnnie L. Turner, 76, passed away on Tuesday evening, one month after an unusual accident in which he fell into an empty swimming pool while riding a lawn mower. The unfortunate incident occurred on September 15, resulting in severe injuries that he fought valiantly until his death. Republican Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers made the announcement, highlighting Turner's hard-fought battle.

Turner, a prominent Republican figure and an attorney by profession, had a notable career in public service. Having served as a US Army medic, he later transitioned into politics. He represented his community in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. His commitment to public service continued when he was elected to the state Senate for District 29 in 2021.

In recent years, Turner was a vocal advocate for pro-coal industry legislation, seeking measures to boost the economy in his district. The region had suffered economically due to the rise of cheaper natural gas prices and stricter environmental regulations. His efforts to support Eastern Kentucky's coal industry earned him local and national recognition.

Despite his tragic death just weeks before the upcoming November 5 election, Turner's name will remain on the general election ballot. Stivers spoke of Turner's remarkable resolve and strength during his final weeks, adding that Turner's dedication to serving others was evident throughout his life, whether in the military, in the state legislature, or in his legal practice.

The community has felt the loss deeply, with Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne describing Turner as an "ardent champion and passionate voice for eastern Kentucky." U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell also mourned Turner, recalling his hands-on involvement in aiding flood-affected areas in Eastern Kentucky. Known for his love of the mountains and its people, Turner was commended for his unwavering commitment and service.

Born on December 25, 1947, Turner grew up in Harlan County and served in the US Army from 1967 to 1969. He pursued higher education at Union College and the University of Kentucky College of Law. Turner leaves behind his wife, three children, and grandchildren, who are now grieving the loss of a devoted family man and tireless public servant.
