In a stern warning issued on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned that any decision by the United States or its NATO allies to permit Ukraine to utilize Western-supplied long-range missiles against Russia would be viewed as NATO's direct involvement in the ongoing conflict. Putin emphasized that such an action would result in a significant shift in the nature of the conflict.
Addressing the issue, Putin stated, "Flight assignments for these missile systems can, in fact, only be entered by military personnel from NATO countries. Ukrainian servicemen cannot do this. And therefore, it is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of making a decision whether NATO countries directly participate in the military conflict or not."
He further added, "If this decision is made, it will mean nothing less than the direct participation of NATO countries, the United States, and European countries, in the war in Ukraine." The Russian leader emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that approval from the US and Britain for Ukraine's use of long-range missiles would signify that these countries are actively engaging in a conflict with Russia.
US officials, however, have informed CBS News that Ukraine is capable of assigning missile targets without the direct involvement of the US or NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been urging his Western partners to authorize the firing of long-range missiles, including the US ATACMS and British Storm Shadows, deep into Russian territory.
Referring to the potential consequences of such a move, Putin warned, "And if this is so, then, bearing in mind the change in the very essence of this conflict, we will make appropriate decisions based on the threats that will be created for us."
Following Putin's statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov affirmed its significance, stating, "The statement that Putin made yesterday is very important. It is extremely clear, unambiguous and does not allow for any double readings. And we have no doubt that this statement has reached its addressees."
As tensions continue to simmer between Russia and Ukraine, the world waits with apprehension to witness the response of Western powers to Putin's unequivocal warnings. The outcome of this delicate situation could have far-reaching implications for the already fragile dynamics of the conflict.
