In a recent report by CNN, it was revealed that the presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump garnered a total viewership of 47.9 million people across various media platforms. Despite the significant audience turnout, this figure represents a considerable 34% drop in viewership compared to the first Biden-Trump debate in 2020, which attracted a staggering 73 million viewers.

Nevertheless, CNN stated that the debate still made history for the network, becoming its highest-rated program ever as well as the most livestreamed event. In fact, it has also stood out as the most-watched nonsports program of the year thus far, according to the network's records.

The debate captivated audiences not only on CNN but also across all major news networks, including NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. Additionally, it was simulcasted on platforms such as PBS, C-SPAN, MSNBC, and Fox Business. The event was made available for streaming on numerous digital platforms, making it easily accessible for viewers worldwide.

Although the debate sparked a wave of discussion, particularly regarding Joe Biden potentially stepping aside as the Democratic candidate for president, the report did not delve into this topic further. Instead, CNN focused on the challenge that would come with finding a replacement for Biden if such a decision were to be made.

Overall, while the viewership for the presidential debate saw a significant drop when compared to last year's event, it still managed to leave its mark by breaking records for CNN and solidifying its position as the most-watched nonsports program of 2021.
