### Kamala Harris and Democrats Continue Fundraising Efforts Post-Election Loss
Despite raising over $1 billion in the campaign against Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party are still actively seeking donations following their electoral defeat. The Democrats are intensifying their fundraising appeals to Harris' supporters, focusing on the implications of the Republican president-elect’s upcoming administration picks and unresolved congressional races.
According to Michigan Democratic strategist Adrian Hemond, who has been approached to aid in fundraising, the Harris campaign spent more money than it raised. Democratic efforts currently include leveraging Harris' extensive email donor list with frequent appeals targeted at small-dollar donors, and Hemond notes that high-value donors are also receiving individual calls.
An anonymous source familiar with the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) finances indicated that the anticipated shortfall for the Harris campaign is minor relative to the overall scale of the campaign, which had $119 million in cash reserves in mid-October. This highlights the financial strain that losing campaigns endure and the immediate challenges Democrats face in opposing the new administration and gearing up for the 2026 midterm elections. The Democrats' expenditure choices, such as hosting celebrity events and advertising in costly venues like Las Vegas' domed Sphere, have also come under scrutiny.
Patrick Stauffer, the Harris campaign’s chief financial officer, assured that no debts were outstanding as of Election Day and that upcoming financial disclosures will show no debt for the campaign or the DNC. However, invoices for recent events and media expenses are still being processed, making it difficult to determine the exact balance sheet.
Following Trump's announcement of Florida Republican Matt Gaetz as his pick for Attorney General, Harris' supporters received a fundraising email for the "Harris Fight Fund." The email raised concerns about Gaetz and the new administration's potential agenda, urging donors to help prevent Trump's plans for "revenge and retribution."
Further emails in Harris' name were sent, emphasizing the ongoing fight for America's future and highlighting critical races across the nation that remain unresolved. Notably, these emails did not reference Harris' campaign or financial status.
The "Harris Fight Fund," a postelection iteration of the "Harris Victory Fund," facilitates joint fundraising for Harris' campaign, the DNC, and state Democratic parties. Donation allocations favor the national party unless donors specify otherwise. For instance, the first $41,300 from individuals and $15,000 from PACs go to the DNC, with contributions beyond that directed to the Harris for President "Recount Account" and state parties.
With leadership changes anticipated next year, the DNC has not committed to covering any shortfall for Harris' campaign, though the possibility of reallocating funds has not been fully dismissed.
