In a significant development, Polish authorities have apprehended a national, identified as Pawel K, on charges of carrying out espionage activities on behalf of Russia's military intelligence. The suspect is believed to have been involved in a plot to assassinate Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and provided crucial information to Russian military intelligence for planning the potential attack.

According to a statement released by Polish prosecutors on Thursday, Pawel K had expressed his readiness to act on behalf of the Russian military intelligence services, establishing direct contact with individuals involved in the conflict in Ukraine. The suspect's collaboration with Russian special forces aimed at orchestrating a possible assassination attempt on President Zelenskyy.

If convicted, Pawel K could face a maximum sentence of up to eight years in prison, as stated in the official release. The Ukrainian prosecutors alerted their Polish counterparts about the suspect's activities, leading to the collection of essential evidence that aided in his arrest.

Further details from Andriy Kostin, Ukraine's Prosecutor-General, revealed that Pawel K was assigned to gather and transmit information concerning the security of Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland. This airport is employed by United States troops and is frequently used by President Zelenskyy during his overseas travels, as well as by foreign officials and aid convoys destined for Ukraine.

In response to the arrest, Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin condemned the actions of the suspect, emphasizing the ongoing threat posed by Russia not only to Ukraine but to the global community as a whole. Kostin highlighted that Russia's criminal regime consistently engages in sabotage operations within the territories of other sovereign nations.

Acknowledging the vital role played by the Polish special services and prosecutors in this operation, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski lauded the strong cooperation with neighboring Ukraine.

The arrest of Pawel K underscores the continued danger posed by Russia and serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and international collaboration in combating such threats to ensure the security and sovereignty of nations worldwide.
