In a recent development in the ongoing investigation of the Gilgo Beach murders, police have served a search warrant at the home of Rex Heuermann, the primary suspect in the case. The authorities conducted the search on Monday, with no family members present at the time.
Asa Ellerup, Heuermann's estranged wife, confirmed that the search took place at their residence. The specific reason for the search and the information the police were seeking have not been disclosed yet.
During the morning search, the medical examiner arrived at the scene, and evidence bags were seen being carried out of the home. The nature of the evidence contained in these bags has not been revealed.
It remains unclear if this recent search is connected to a previous multiday search in the woods of Manorville, New York, conducted last month. Heuermann, who is awaiting trial, currently faces murder charges in connection with the deaths of four women, known as the Gilgo Four, whose bodies were discovered along Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York.
The investigation led to the arrest of Heuermann, who was later charged with the deaths of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. All four victims were sex workers, and their remains, along with several others, were found between 2010 and 2011 along Gilgo Beach.
During the initial search of Heuermann's home in summer 2023, police found a significant number of items, including over 200 weapons. The backyard of the residence was also searched. Heuermann's family claimed that investigators left the home in disarray.
Following Heuermann's arrest, Ellerup filed for divorce. Remarkably, her DNA played a crucial role in identifying Heuermann as a suspect, as familial DNA was utilized by the police to aid in the identification process.
It should be noted that at this time, Heuermann has not been linked to any additional deaths related to the string of murders. The investigation continues to uncover more evidence, shedding light on the tragic events that unfolded at Gilgo Beach over a decade ago.
