In a distressing incident, a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted while sunbathing alone in New York City's Central Park. The assault occurred on Monday afternoon in the Great Hill section of the park, as confirmed by New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Patrol John Chell during a press conference.
According to Chell, the assailant approached the woman and exposed himself. In her attempt to escape, she screamed and ran, but the attacker chased her down and attacked her from behind in an attempt to overpower her. Despite the terrifying ordeal, the woman managed to fend off the assailant, who fled the scene, leaving her physically unharmed.
Following the incident, the victim was taken to a local hospital where she cooperated with investigators. The NYPD has been actively pursuing leads, canvassing for witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras, and utilizing drones to scour the area. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the police have set up a mobile command center and established a perimeter around the crime scene.
According to NYPD Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard, officers will remain vigilant in their efforts until the perpetrator is apprehended. In an effort to enhance security measures, the department plans to install additional cameras throughout Central Park, particularly in the lesser-traveled areas where criminal incidents like this have occurred.
Chief Chell emphasized that this incident does not indicate a pattern of sexual assault within or around Central Park. The NYPD remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals who visit the iconic park. Efforts will be ongoing to identify and bring the perpetrator to justice, while bolstering security measures to prevent further incidents.
Anyone with information about the assault or the suspect is urged to contact the NYPD immediately. The department encourages the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or individuals they may encounter in and around Central Park.
