Police in Charleston, South Carolina, have been called to the Citadel Mall in West Ashley following a reported shooting incident on Friday afternoon. According to Sgt. Chris Stinson, officers were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to a disturbance that broke out in the food court area involving a large fight between several individuals.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the altercation quickly escalated, with at least one gunshot being fired. As law enforcement arrived, several individuals fled on foot, while one person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
A witness, who was present in the mall getting a haircut at the time, informed News 2 that a fight broke out among a group of people, leading to a scuffle on the ground. The witness then observed someone brandishing a handgun.
Authorities have stated that there is no active threat to the public, but the area is currently being treated as a crime scene. The public has been advised to avoid the vicinity of Citadel Mall while law enforcement conducts their investigation. As a result, the mall will remain closed for the night, except for Target, which is still accessible to shoppers.
