A woman identified as 22-year-old Yazmyn Stewart was killed in a police-involved shooting in Chester, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, following a cross-state chase that began with an attempt to serve a warrant in Delaware. The incident unfolded after police sought to apprehend Stewart for her alleged involvement in a shooting that occurred on December 2, 2023, on West 8th Street in Wilmington.

Authorities initially tried to serve the warrant to Stewart at a residence on North Madison Street in Wilmington, but she managed to escape in a vehicle. According to Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky, Stewart fled from the police because she was wanted and there was an active warrant against her.

The ensuing chase led police to the 2100 block of Market Street in Upper Chichester, Pennsylvania, where Stewart crashed her car and allegedly fired shots at the officers. During the exchange, two Delaware state troopers also discharged their weapons, although it remains unclear if Stewart was struck by their gunfire.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with armed officers ordering Stewart to get out of her vehicle and flee. John Rapp, who witnessed the incident, reported hearing multiple rounds being fired, and seeing a black Tahoe vehicle with a blown-out window speeding away from the area.

Following the car crash, the woman carjacked a dark-colored SUV and drove to Chester. She subsequently crashed into a building before gaining access to a home on 12th and Kerlin streets by climbing through a window. The homeowner, who chose not to be identified, shared her encounter with Stewart, recounting that the suspect wanted to stay in her house but was denied entry. Eventually, law enforcement arrived, and the homeowner followed their instructions to leave with her baby. Moments later, Stewart took the homeowner's car and attempted to drive off in a maroon sedan, prompting officers to open fire on the vehicle.

Cell phone footage captured the intense moments when gunshots were heard. Unfortunately, Stewart was fatally injured in the shootout. One Wilmington officer sustained a minor injury and was transported to the hospital for evaluation, while no other injuries were reported.

The incident involved the participation of members from multiple police departments, including the Wilmington Police Department, the Delaware State Police, the Trainer Borough Police Department, and the Chester Police Department. In total, three members of the Wilmington Police Department, five members of the Delaware State Police, one member of the Trainer Borough Police Department, and one member of the Chester Police Department discharged their firearms during the confrontation.

As a result of the incident and ensuing investigation, a portion of Interstate 95 near the scene in Chester was temporarily shut down but has since reopened.

This case continues to be under investigation, with authorities working to determine the full sequence of events and conduct a thorough examination of the shooting.
