In response to the recent wave of violent disorder that swept the nation following the Southport attack, Sir Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that police forces across the country will increase their cooperation to tackle this issue head-on. During a crisis meeting with police chiefs, measures were discussed to clamp down on violent groups and prevent further outbreaks of rioting.

Describing the scenes that unfolded in the aftermath of the stabbing as the "actions of a tiny, mindless minority," Starmer condemned the spread of far-right hatred. As part of the new national violent disorder program, police forces will be able to share intelligence, enhancing their ability to apprehend and take action against those responsible for inciting violence. The aim is to counter the mobility of these thugs who move from community to community, requiring a police response that can do the same.

In a televised speech, Sir Keir emphasized that the violence witnessed was not a form of protest but a crime, stating, "We will take all necessary action to keep our streets safe." He further stated that those involved in rioting should not pretend to speak for the grieving families, adding that the community of Southport had already endured significant suffering.

The new powers granted to the police include the sharing of intelligence and the wider deployment of facial recognition technology. These measures are intended to aid in identifying and apprehending violent offenders. Additionally, authorities will utilize Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBO) to restrict the movement of individuals with a history of violent behavior, similar to measures employed against football hooligans.

Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, Chair of the National Police Chiefs Council, expressed optimism about avoiding further disorder, stating that although it is their job to worry, it is not inevitable. He cautioned those contemplating attending future riots that they would face the full force of the law. Stephens also appealed to communities to come together and avoid exacerbating the situation.

Chief Constable Sir Andy Marsh of the College of Policing emphasized the importance of communication and preparedness among police leaders across England and Wales. The emergency meeting brought together key stakeholders to ensure effective coordination in dealing with violent disorder.

In the wake of the widespread disorder, mosques were targeted, prompting the Muslim Council of Britain to urge mosques to strengthen security measures during Friday prayers. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, reassuring British Muslims, pledged to take every necessary step to ensure their safety.

When questioned about holding social media companies accountable for the dissemination of disinformation on their platforms, the prime minister stressed the need for discussions to strike the "right balance." He emphasized that social media carries great responsibility in preventing the spread of harmful content.

With the introduction of the national violent disorder program, police forces aim to combat violent disorder effectively while safeguarding communities and maintaining public safety. The shared intelligence and enhanced measures will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by these violent groups and ensuring a swift response to any future incidents.
