A pilot sustained serious injuries when a military aircraft, a developmental model of the F-35 fighter jet, crashed on Tuesday afternoon near New Mexico's Albuquerque International Sunport, according to authorities. The plane was being delivered by Lockheed Martin, confirmed two Defense Department officials to CBS News.
The incident occurred shortly after the aircraft took off from Albuquerque and was en route to Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, as disclosed by the officials. Lt. Jason Fejer, spokesperson for Albuquerque Fire Rescue, shared in a social media video that multiple agencies swiftly responded to the crash, which transpired a little before 2 p.m. local time.
Reports indicate that the aircraft went down near the airfield on the southside of the Sunport, as stated by the airport on social media. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the plane, managed to exit the aircraft and was conscious. The pilot was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries, as confirmed by the airport.
At the scene, two civilians were assessed by emergency personnel but did not require hospitalization, added Fejer. It remains unclear whether the pilot was a service member or a civilian.
Footage from KOB-TV showcased local firefighters diligently extinguishing the wreckage, managing to successfully control the ensuing blaze. The quick response from first responders received praise from Albuquerque's Mayor, Tim Keller, who expressed gratitude on social media. He also mentioned his prayers for the pilot's recovery.
As investigations into the crash continue, the focus will be on determining the cause of the incident and providing support to the injured pilot.
