An Orange County deputy has been arrested in Seminole County on multiple charges, including interception and disclosure of wire or electronic communication, as well as the unlawful use of a two-way communication device. The arrest took place on Sunday, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy in question, identified as Francisco Estrella, allegedly sought information about an ongoing investigation involving an armed carjacking, kidnapping, and killing that occurred last week. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma revealed that Estrella called the detective assigned to the case, posing as an Orange County detective and claiming to be the victim's cousin.

Sheriff Lemma expressed concern over the incident, stating that it creates a dangerous environment for both deputies and staff. This deceptive act undermines the integrity and trust within law enforcement agencies.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has taken immediate action, relieving Deputy Estrella of his duties without pay while the criminal case unfolds. In addition, an administrative investigation will be conducted by the agency once the criminal proceedings are complete, with the findings to be made publicly available.

Sheriff John Mina of the Orange County Sheriff's Office addressed the seriousness of the allegations, emphasizing that any misuse of power by law enforcement officers is completely unacceptable. He reaffirmed the commitment of his office to upholding the highest ethical standards and not tolerating any illegal activity within their ranks.

Deputy Estrella was hired in September 2022 and is now facing significant legal consequences. The charges against him include unauthorized access to electronic devices, disclosure or use of confidential criminal justice information, and the interception of wire, oral, or electronic communications.

The arrest serves as a reminder that law enforcement officers are entrusted with the responsibility to protect and serve the community. Violations of that trust can have severe implications, compromising public safety and eroding confidence in the justice system. The case against Deputy Estrella will proceed through the criminal justice process, ensuring the accountability of those who misuse their authority.
