In a recent interview just outside the convention, Democratic power players engaged in a heated discussion about the state of the party and the upcoming 2024 race. The Ohio senator sparked controversy by referring to the Kentucky governor as "a disgusting person." What followed was a heated public skirmish between Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Senator JD Vance.
Governor Beshear suggested during an appearance on "Morning Joe" that Vance should experience the circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape. "JD Vance calls pregnancy resulting from rape inconvenient," Beshear exclaimed. "Inconvenience is traffic. Make him go through this." Beshear passionately argued that such a traumatic experience should not be dismissed lightly, stating, "It is someone being violated, someone being harmed, and then telling them that they don't have options after that. That fails any tests of decency and humanity."
The incident occurred after Hadley Duvall, a woman from Governor Beshear's state, bravely shared her story of being raped by her stepfather and becoming pregnant at the age of 12 during the convention. Beshear, who was initially considered a potential running mate for Kamala Harris, addressed the audience on Monday, aiming to highlight the severity of the issue.
However, Vance and his allies promptly seized on Beshear's comments. Vance took to social media to express his outrage, asking, "What the hell is this? Why is @AndyBeshearKY wishing that a member of my family would get raped?!?" Clearly appalled by Beshear's remarks, Vance branded him as "a disgusting person."
Beshear later defended his statements during a subsequent cable news appearance, dismissing Vance's response as deflection. "It's ridiculous but it's also deflection," Beshear remarked. He argued that Vance was aware of his and Donald Trump's flawed stance on the issue, using himself as a scapegoat. Furthermore, Beshear emphasized that as a man, Vance would never personally have to face the consequences of such a traumatic experience.
This recent clash between Governor Beshear and Senator Vance is not the first time they have engaged in a war of words. Following Joe Biden's endorsement of Kamala Harris, Beshear made an appearance on "Morning Joe" to mock Vance's discussions of his family ties to Kentucky in his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," stating that Vance "ain't from here." In response, Vance criticized Beshear's own background and questioned his credibility.
The ongoing feud between these Democratic figures has drawn attention to the complex and sensitive issue of pregnancy resulting from rape. While the political landscape remains tense, it is clear that the conversation surrounding this topic will continue to be fiercely debated as the 2024 race approaches.
