A recent officer-involved shooting is currently under investigation in Cedar Rapids, according to local news outlet KCRG. The incident took place on Saturday evening when the Cedar Rapids Police Department received a 911 call requesting assistance at a residence on 31st Street NE.

Shortly after the initial call, another 911 call was received, asking for a welfare check on the first caller. The second caller reported that the individual making the distress call had made statements about being suicidal and homicidal and was armed.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers from the Cedar Rapids Police Department encountered both callers. Taking a high-risk approach due to the presence of a weapon, officers gave verbal commands to the individual in question to drop their weapon. Unfortunately, the suspect raised their weapon, prompting three officers to fire their weapons in response. The suspect was struck and subsequently died at the scene.

Tragically, the second caller also sustained gunshot wounds and was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment. The identity of the second caller, as well as the suspect, has not been released.

It is a relief to note that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Authorities have confirmed that there is currently no known threat to the community stemming from this unfortunate event.

In order to ensure transparency and impartiality, the Cedar Rapids Police Department has requested the assistance of the Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crime Unit to conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Additionally, the Division of Criminal Investigation Laboratory Crime Scene Team has assisted in examining the scene for evidence.

As part of standard protocol, the three Cedar Rapids Police Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave during the course of the investigation. The names of the officers involved, along with the identities of the caller and the suspect, have not been disclosed at this time.
