A peaceful office retreat in the stunning Rocky Mountains of Colorado took a harrowing turn for one employee over the weekend. The 50-something man, whose identity remains undisclosed, found himself separated from his colleagues who work in the insurance industry, forcing him to navigate through treacherous terrain on his own.

The incident occurred during an excursion up Mount Shavano, a towering "fourteener" summit exceeding 14,000 feet. The group had split into smaller teams, some aiming for the summit while others planned to trek to the mountain's lower "saddle" before returning.

Unfortunately, the lone hiker ended up caught between the two groups. As he attempted to descend the mountain after reaching the summit, he became disoriented, hampered by the absence of gear left by his colleagues to mark their path through the boulders.

Desperate to find his way back, the hiker resorted to using his cellphone to send GPS pins to his coworkers, who advised him to double back toward the trail. However, as dusk approached, a strong storm with freezing rain and high winds swept in, causing the cell signal to weaken and leaving him completely disoriented.

When two of his coworkers went back up the trail to search for him, darkness fell, forcing them to turn back empty-handed. Concerned about his safety, a call for an overdue hiker was issued at 9 p.m., mobilizing multiple search teams, a drone, and a helicopter. Unfortunately, the storm made it too dangerous to ascend the summit.

A glimmer of hope emerged on Saturday morning when the lost hiker's phone regained enough signal for him to call 911. Finally, search teams from various agencies successfully located him in a gully. Exhausted and relieved, he informed the rescuers that he had fallen numerous times during his desperate journey down the mountain.

After a strenuous operation to bring him to safety, the man was transported to a hospital where he received necessary care. Thankfully, he is now recovering at home with his family, as confirmed by Evan Brady, the public information officer for Chaffee County Search and Rescue South, the organization leading the rescue effort.

This incident has underscored the importance of staying together during group hikes, as hikers separating from their teams is the leading cause of lost individuals, according to Brady. The traumatizing experience endured by the insurance industry workers on this office retreat will undoubtedly leave lasting impressions and potentially awkward encounters in the upcoming days and weeks at the office.
