A New York City police officer, Hieu Tran, 27, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to a news release by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. The charges stem from a road rage incident in Voorhees Township, South Jersey, last month.
The incident occurred on May 17 when police responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road at 11:13 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that one of the drivers had sustained a gunshot wound. The injured man, aged 30, is currently undergoing treatment at Cooper University Hospital.
After an extensive investigation, detectives reviewed surveillance footage and cell phone records, leading them to accuse Officer Tran of shooting the victim. Prosecutors also revealed that ballistics evidence from Tran's department-issued firearm was linked to the incident.
Following his arrest, Officer Tran has been suspended without pay from his job in the NYPD, as confirmed by an NYPD spokesperson. He is currently being held in custody by the NYPD and awaits extradition to Camden County.
The charges against Officer Tran emphasize the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the incident, as attempted murder is a grave offense with severe consequences. The arrest serves as a reminder that law enforcement officers must be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their professional status.
As the case proceeds, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office will continue its investigation to ensure justice is served. The upcoming legal proceedings will determine the exact nature of Officer Tran's involvement in the road rage shooting and the appropriate penalties if found guilty.
