The New York City Department of Investigation is currently conducting a probe into the city Sheriff's Office and its leader, Anthony Miranda, as part of the expanding investigations into Mayor Eric Adams' inner circle. The investigation by the DOI, a city agency tasked with uncovering municipal corruption, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York comes amid federal prosecutors looking into potential ties to Turkey, including Mayor Adams and his 2021 campaign members. Miranda and Adams have had a longstanding alliance dating back to their time in the NYPD.
The exact focus of the investigation concerning Miranda is not entirely clear, but a Department of Finance employee with direct knowledge mentioned that the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York was examining allegations of "public corruption". As per the employee, federal investigators had also questioned other city employees about Miranda in the previous year. Meanwhile, the New York City Sheriff's Office, overseen by the Department of Finance, is responsible for property confiscation, enforcing cigarette licensing rules, and has the authority to penalize and shut down unlicensed cannabis shops.
Miranda's past has been marked by controversy, including an incident where he lent his City Council campaign money and reimbursed himself with interest. The New York City Deputy Sheriff's Association called for his resignation in June 2024, alleging a hostile work environment. In a City Council hearing on cannabis enforcement, the union head and a lawyer representing cannabis store owners raised concerns about Miranda's conduct and the handling of enforcement efforts by his office. Despite criticisms and allegations, Miranda was appointed to lead the sheriff's office by Mayor Adams in May 2022.
