North Carolina has once again secured a promising quarterback for their upcoming recruiting class, as Zaid Lott announced his commitment to the Tar Heels on Monday. Lott, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound athlete from Charlotte's Providence Day School, becomes the first commitment for the Tar Heels in 2026.
Lott's potential has not gone unnoticed, with his head coach, Chad Grier, praising his elite arm talent. Grier described Lott as a grinder, who has worked hard to develop his skills over the past two years. Lott's dedication and coachability have impressed both his high school coach and the UNC coaching staff.
Chip Lindsey, UNC's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, played a significant role in recruiting Lott. The talented quarterback received an offer from Lindsey during a meeting in Chapel Hill on April 6. Lott had early offers from other notable schools such as Boston College, Florida State, and NC State, but ultimately chose UNC.
Although Lott has primarily served as the backup to Michigan freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis, he has shown promise on the field. In the 2022 season, Lott made appearances in five games, completing 50% of his passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns. This past fall, he continued to impress, completing 80% of his passes for 331 yards and rushing for two scores in eight contests.
Despite limited game film, Lott's abilities have caught the attention of scouts. His head coach stated that witnessing Lott's throws in person is impressive, showcasing his incredible arm talent.
Lott's commitment to UNC comes after a successful summer, leading Providence Day School to victories in the Carolina Panthers' 7-on-7 tournament and at 7-on-7 camps at both NC State and Duke. His performances have solidified his position as the starting quarterback for his team.
Within the past week, Lott has visited the UNC campus twice. He participated in the 7-on-7 camp on Thursday and then attended the Showtime Camp on Sunday, further strengthening his connection with the university.
With the addition of Zaid Lott, North Carolina is well on its way to building a competitive recruiting class for 2026. Lott's talent and potential make him a valuable asset for the Tar Heels, and fans eagerly await his future performances on the field.
