In a tragic incident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau lost their lives after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bicycles. The devastating news has gripped the hockey community and prompted an outpouring of condolences and support for the Gaudreau family.

Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny's wife, broke her silence and expressed her love and grief in an emotional Instagram post. She thanked her late husband for "the best years" of her life and expressed how lucky she felt to have been part of his journey. Sharing family photos, she reminisced about the perfect moments they had together and professed her eternal love for him. In a separate post, she praised Johnny's qualities as a father, calling him the "absolute best dad in the world" and emphasizing his dedication and love for their daughter Noa.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday night when the Gaudreau brothers were biking in the town. According to an affidavit of probable cause, Sean Higgins, the driver responsible, attempted to pass two vehicles, a sedan and an SUV, when he collided with Johnny and Matthew. Higgins claimed that he thought the SUV was trying to impede his passing maneuver, leading him to unlawfully re-enter the northbound lane and collide with the brothers who were biking on the narrow shoulder.

Authorities detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from Higgins' breath at the scene, and he failed a sobriety test. The probable cause alleges that Higgins admitted to consuming five to six beers prior to the accident. He has been charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently held at the Salem County Correctional Facility. During his court appearance, a judge ordered that he remain in custody until his detention trial on September 5. If convicted, Higgins could face up to 10 years in prison.

The untimely loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau has sent shockwaves throughout the hockey world. Johnny, 31, had a successful career playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Matthew, 29, was pursuing his own dreams in the sport. The tragedy struck just one day before they were due to be groomsmen in their sister Katie's wedding, adding another layer of heartbreak to the already devastating situation.

As the community mourns the loss of these talented individuals, their memories will undoubtedly live on. The Gaudreau family seeks solace in the support they have received and plans to honor Johnny and Matthew's legacies. The hockey world stands united in their grief and in demanding justice for this senseless and preventable tragedy.
