Dallas, Texas - Nearly a week after a multivehicle hit-and-run collision involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice, it is still unclear what charges the 23-year-old might face in relation to the incident. Rice, a former standout at Richland High School and SMU, was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV when the crash occurred, injuring at least four people and causing extensive damage to multiple vehicles.
Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West, expects Dallas police to file charges against his client soon. During a news conference, West confirmed that Rice took "full responsibility" for his involvement in the collision. The incident came to light when police expressed interest in speaking with Rice regarding the crash.
According to Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman, the collision occurred when both Rice, driving the Urus, and another driver in a Chevrolet Corvette were speeding in the far left lane of the highway near University Boulevard. Both drivers lost control, with the Urus veering onto the shoulder and colliding with the center median wall, leading to a chain reaction collision involving multiple vehicles.
Video recordings from dashboard cameras captured the Urus and the Corvette attempting to pass in the left lane before colliding with a white sedan and other vehicles, subsequently blocking several lanes of traffic. Rice was connected to both cars, as he had rented the Urus, and the Corvette was either registered or leased in his name.
While no charges have been filed as of Thursday, a police report reveals that approximately 10.8 grams of marijuana, less than an ounce, were found in the Lamborghini SUV that Rice was driving at the time of the crash. Possession of two ounces or less of marijuana in Texas is considered a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
As the investigation continues, Dallas police officials plan to conduct interviews with witnesses, victims, and any other individuals potentially involved in the incident. Rice's legal team has been in contact with law enforcement authorities since Sunday and is cooperating fully.
Rice's attorney, West, emphasized that his client had not attempted to flee from the scene and had answered all questions posed by the police. West also mentioned that Rice had reached out to some of the injured parties and expressed his commitment to bring a sense of normalcy back to their lives.
While at least three victims have retained attorneys, Rice's legal team is preparing for their client to speak publicly in the coming week. West urged the public not to judge Rice solely based on the collision and encouraged them to get to know the young athlete.
As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen what charges will be levied against Rashee Rice. The outcome of this case will determine the future of his NFL career and could have potential legal consequences for the young wide receiver.
