The NFL has handed down fines to the Kansas City Chiefs organization and tight end Peyton Hendershot following a sideline shove incident involving Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith during last week's kickoff game. Sources indicate that the Chiefs organization has been fined $100,000, while Hendershot will face a fine of $5,472.

Although Hendershot was inactive for the game, having been acquired via trade from the Dallas Cowboys, he came to the defense of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes when Smith appeared to knock him down after stepping out of bounds during a fourth-quarter run. Surprisingly, no penalties were called on either Hendershot or Smith, with the latter accusing Mahomes of exaggerating contact in an attempt to draw a penalty.

The Chiefs emerged victorious with a 27-20 win in the season opener, but the aftermath of the incident has seen Hendershot express his intent to appeal the fine imposed by the league, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Smith, who referenced Hendershot as number 88, voiced his displeasure with the push, stating, "I don't know who he is, but he better watch himself. He did a little slick push. I'll see him when I see him."

In recent years, the NFL has taken a strict stance against inactive players and other sideline personnel getting involved in altercations with active players. A memo sent to all clubs on August 7 emphasized the prohibitions against unnecessary physical contact, taunting, and directing abusive language or gestures towards opponents, game officials, or league representatives. The memo also highlighted that clubs held responsibility for the conduct of their players and personnel throughout the game day period.

NFL Football Operations has stated its intention to enforce these policies and hold individuals and clubs accountable with measures that include potential ejections, fines, and suspensions without pay.

As Hendershot plans to appeal the fine, it remains to be seen how the NFL will proceed with the matter and what repercussions, if any, will be faced by the Kansas City Chiefs organization.
