In the aftermath of the tragic shooting incident that claimed the lives of Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff Lt. Michael Hoosock, New York State Police have stepped up to provide support and ensure public safety.

According to state and local authorities, state troopers will temporarily fill in for Syracuse police officers and Onondaga County sheriff's deputies as they attend the funerals and mourn the loss of their fallen colleagues. Their assistance will include responding to calls, assisting with traffic management, and offering logistical support.

Starting from 3 p.m. today, state troopers will be on hand to help until Monday, during which time about 15,000 mourners are expected to attend two separate funerals. The funeral for Officer Jensen will be held on Saturday at a small church in Rome, while the services for Lt. Hoosock have been scheduled for Monday at the New York State Fairgrounds.

The spokesman for Governor Kathy Hochul stated that the state troopers have also agreed to extend their coverage beyond Monday if additional support is required. This commitment by the New York State Police underscores their dedication to keeping the community safe during this difficult time.

In light of the temporary absence of Syracuse police officers, the department has encouraged residents to report non-emergency matters through alternative methods. Residents can leave voicemail messages at the department's tele-serve line, (315) 442-5207, or submit reports online via the police department's website. However, it's important to note that Onondaga County residents should continue to call 911 in case of emergencies.

The loss of Officer Jensen and Lt. Hoosock has deeply impacted the law enforcement community and the entire Syracuse area. The support and solidarity shown by the New York State Police in stepping in to fill the gaps during this challenging period is a testament to the unwavering commitment to public safety shared by all branches of law enforcement.

As the community mourns the loss of two dedicated officers, let us come together to honor their memory and support one another.
