Previously demoted to the fourth-string position, Jones approached team owner John Mara on Friday to discuss his departure. Mara acknowledged the meeting in a statement, expressing mutual agreement that parting ways was in the best interests of both parties.
"Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him," Mara said. "We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out."
Since joining the Giants, Jones has been considered highly by the organization. Mara emphasized the team's high regard for Jones, conveying immense appreciation for his contributions. "We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future," he added.
Jones will now enter the NFL's waiver process but is expected to go unclaimed due to the $13,805,555 salary he is guaranteed for the remainder of the season. Clearing waivers would make him a free agent, opening up opportunities elsewhere.
With Jones' departure, the Giants are turning their focus to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. Tommy DeVito will start as quarterback, with Drew Lock as his backup. Tim Boyle, who was recently added to the practice squad, will serve as the Giants' No. 3 quarterback.
The Giants are currently 2-8 as they head into Week 12, and they are predicted to be among the top teams in the upcoming offseason draft. The team faces a challenging season with limited marquee quarterback options available.
