**New York City Mayor Eric Adams Faces Federal Corruption Charges**
New York City Mayor Eric Adams turned himself in to federal authorities on Friday after being indicted on five corruption charges, which include taking bribes and campaign contributions from foreign nationals. The 64-year-old mayor is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker in Manhattan at noon, where he is expected to enter a plea. Adams has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and vowed to contest the allegations in court, stating, "I will continue to do my job as mayor."
The indictment comprises five charges: conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, bribery, and two counts of soliciting campaign contributions from a foreign national. According to federal prosecutors, Turkish diplomats and businesspeople funneled money illegally into Adams' campaign and provided him with luxury travel perks, which included stays at lavish hotels and dining at high-end restaurants.
Prosecutors allege that Adams defrauded the city’s public campaign finance program of $10 million through these unlawful contributions and received $100,000 worth of travel to countries such as France, China, Sri Lanka, India, Hungary, and Turkey. In return, Adams allegedly pressured city officials in 2021 to permit the opening of Turkey's new 36-story consulate despite safety concerns.
The suspected wrongdoing dates back to 2014, when Adams was the Brooklyn borough president. The illegal contributions were purportedly used to support his 2021 mayoral campaign. "As Adams' prominence and power grew, his foreign-national benefactors sought to cash in on their corrupt relationships with him," the indictment notes, stating that Adams provided favorable treatment in exchange for the illicit benefits he received.
Adams, a former police officer who rose to the rank of captain, is notable as the first mayor in New York City's history to be charged with a federal crime while in office. Over the past few months, New York Police Commissioner Eric Caban resigned after the FBI seized his phone, followed by the resignation of Adams’ top legal adviser, Lisa Zornberg.
