Moldova has taken decisive action by expelling a Russian diplomat from the country following allegations of espionage. The unnamed Russian embassy employee in Chisinau was suspected of receiving sensitive information aimed at undermining the interests of the Republic of Moldova. This development comes after the recent arrest of two Moldovan officials, accused of treason for their alleged communication with an embassy employee since 2023.

The Moldovan Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases did not disclose the name of the foreign country involved in the espionage case. However, the decision to expel the Russian diplomat prompted the summoning of the Russian Ambassador, Oleg Vasnetsov, to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry. The diplomat was expelled due to engaging in activities that are incompatible with diplomatic status.

In response to the expulsion, Vasnetsov voiced his concern about the dwindling number of diplomats stationed at the Russian embassy in Moldova. He referred to the recent incident as "very unfriendly" and claimed it had led to a further reduction in personnel at the embassy.
