In a shocking turn of events, authorities in Michigan have announced the arrest of a man in connection with the murder of renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. The 53-year-old doctor was discovered shot dead in his Detroit home on April 23, 2023.
According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, the suspect, a man in an "intimate relationship" with Dr. Hoover, has been identified as Desmond Burks, 34. Burks has now been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Investigators made the chilling discovery when they responded to Dr. Hoover's residence for a well-being check, which was requested by his family after he failed to visit his dying mother in Indiana. Prosecutors revealed that Hoover's body was found in the third-floor attic crawl space, wrapped in a blood-soaked carpet and wearing only socks.
Upon analyzing Dr. Hoover's cellphone records, authorities uncovered approximately 4,000 text messages exchanged between him and Burks, indicating an "intimate relationship." In a shocking revelation, Prosecutor Worthy disclosed that Burks had allegedly charged the neurosurgeon for sexual services on occasion.
Further investigation revealed that on the day of the murder, Dr. Hoover's phone traveled from his home to the vicinity of Burks' residence, then returned to his own home, and once again went back to the area near Burks' home. Worthy highlighted the fact that following the murder, several items were missing from the scene, including Hoover's phone, wallet, and two high-end watches valued at $6,000 and $7,500 respectively.
According to Worthy, substantial evidence has been uncovered that directly links the recovered property to Desmond Burks on the day of the homicide. Additionally, fraudulent financial transactions were made from Dr. Hoover's bank accounts subsequent to his murder, indicating possible theft.
Desmond Burks, aside from being charged with the murder of Dr. Hoover, also faces a second-degree murder charge in an unrelated case involving a deadly road rage incident that occurred in May. Worthy revealed that Burks allegedly got into a verbal altercation after his car was bumped from behind, resulting in him striking the other individual and leaving him injured on the street.
Burks is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, where he will face the charges brought against him in both cases. As the investigation continues, the medical community mourns the loss of Dr. Devon Hoover, a highly regarded neurosurgeon who made significant contributions to his field.
