**Matt Gaetz Withdraws from Attorney General Consideration Amid Controversy**

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has pulled his name from the running for attorney general after an intense debate over the release of a congressional report detailing sexual misconduct allegations against him. Announcing his decision on X, formerly known as Twitter, the 42-year-old indicated that the growing controversy surrounding his potential nomination "was unfairly becoming a distraction" to the new Trump administration's work.

The report in question included findings from an investigation that was prompted by accusations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use against Gaetz. Despite denying the allegations, Gaetz expressed a desire to avoid a "needlessly protracted Washington scuffle."

Gaetz’s withdrawal marks a significant setback for President-elect Donald Trump, who had chosen the congressman for the nation's top law enforcement position. On his platform, Truth Social, Trump commended Gaetz for his efforts, stating, "He was doing very well, but at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the administration, for which he has much respect."

In his post on X, Gaetz emphasized the urgency of having the Justice Department fully operational by the time Trump takes office in January. He reiterated his commitment to Trump’s success, writing, "I remain fully committed to see that Donald J Trump is the most successful president in history. I will forever be honoured that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I am certain he will save America."

The prolonged investigation by a congressional ethics panel into allegations involving drugs, bribes, and sexual misconduct had cast a long shadow over Gaetz's nomination. This context suggested that Gaetz would face considerable obstacles in securing confirmation by the US Senate. Concerns raised by lawmakers, including some Senate Republicans, reportedly led to an intensive behind-the-scenes effort by both Gaetz and Trump to gather the necessary support.

Just a day before Gaetz's withdrawal, the House Ethics Committee convened privately to discuss whether they should release the report on Gaetz. He had already left the House the previous week after being nominated for the attorney general position by Trump. The next nominee for the role remains uncertain.

New York prosecutors have signaled their intention to oppose Trump's efforts to overturn his criminal conviction. Meanwhile, Trump’s other nominations for his administration include Linda McMahon for education secretary, Mehmet Oz for a healthcare role, and his 27-year-old campaign press secretary to handle responsibilities in the White House briefing room.

This tumultuous week has shed light on Trump’s ambitions while also hinting at the potential challenges and political hurdles that lie ahead.
