One person was killed and 11 others were injured in a mass shooting that took place late Sunday night in the Warehouse District of New Orleans, according to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). The incident occurred in the 800 block of South Peters Street, near the nightclub Republic NOLA.

Police received a call at 11:56 p.m. and arrived at the scene to find a woman shot to death and several individuals with gunshot wounds. Among the injured, there were five men and six women. Some of the victims were transported to a local hospital by EMS, while others were driven by private vehicles.

The owner of the Republic, Nick Thomas, confirmed that all staff members were safe and stated that the incident occurred outside the club. However, he declined to provide further comments regarding the tragic event.

The shooting took place during an 18-plus "French Quarter Fest After Party" at the Republic, where hip-hop artist Anycia was scheduled to perform until 2 a.m., according to Eventbrite. Witnesses reported hearing six or seven shots, initially mistaking them for fireworks. Many people were seen fleeing the club, with some running down the street while others sought safety against the building.

Kelsey Holt, who was staying in a nearby hotel, described the chaotic scene she witnessed after being awakened by the gunshots. She saw multiple people pouring out of the club and one woman lying face down in the street, surrounded by a group of people rendering aid. At least four bullet holes were visible on the club's padlocked doors.

This unfortunate incident sheds light on the persistent issue of violence in the area. A nearby worker, who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of workplace retaliation, stated that this was at least the third shooting to have occurred in the same block within the span of two years. The man expressed his lack of surprise, claiming that fights and shootings have become a constant theme in the area.

Looking back, the last mass shooting with a similar magnitude of victims in New Orleans occurred in 2019 on Canal Street, where 10 bystanders and one of the shooters were wounded. Additionally, in 2018, three individuals were killed and seven others were injured in a mass shooting outside the Jazz Daquiris Lounge on South Claiborne Avenue.

In response to the recent surge of gun-related crimes in the city, NOPD will be holding a press conference at its headquarters on Monday at 4 p.m., where NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and other city officials will address not only this mass shooting but also other high-profile incidents involving gun violence that have occurred recently.

The investigation into the mass shooting is ongoing, and the police urge anyone with information to come forward. New Orleans residents can contact the NOPD directly or provide anonymous tips to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
