Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced that he will not seek the Democratic nomination this year and fully supports President Joe Biden's re-election campaign. Despite concerns raised after the president's performance in the recent debate, both Moore and Biden remain committed to staying the course.
During an appearance on "Face the Nation," Moore emphasized his unwavering support for President Biden, stating, "Joe Biden is not going to take himself out of this race - nor should he." Moore confirmed that he would proudly back the president at the Democratic convention in Chicago later this summer and continue working through November to ensure Biden's re-election.
Governor Moore, who is considered a rising star within the Democratic Party, has been mentioned as a possible alternative should Biden step aside. However, Moore made it clear that Biden is the party's nominee, leader, and deserving of full confidence and respect. He dismissed concerns and urged unity, emphasizing the need to provide the president with the partnership he deserves.
Acknowledging the less-than-stellar performance at the debate, President Biden himself admitted he no longer debates as effectively as he used to. However, his campaign has made it clear that there are no intentions of him stepping aside. The debate intensified existing concerns about Mr. Biden's age, with a CBS News poll showing a drop in the number of voters who believe he has the cognitive ability to serve as president.
Notably, views on former President Donald Trump's cognitive ability were also questioned, with about half of all voters expressing doubts. However, voters tended to perceive Trump as presenting his ideas more clearly and appearing confident and presidential during the debate.
Governor Moore, while acknowledging the president's tough night, expressed his faith in Biden's resilience and ability to lead. He cited examples of the president's response to the Baltimore bridge collapse earlier this year, demonstrating his dedication in times of trial. Moore emphasized that he has seen Biden as a remarkable partner and a man of his word.
Moore also highlighted the importance of young voters, stating that they would see themselves reflected in the president's surrogates. As the youngest Democratic governor and the only African American governor in the country, Moore believes in going directly to the people and making the case for a continued partnership with Biden.
Additionally, Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut appeared on "Face the Nation" and downplayed the significance of the debate performance. Himes emphasized that voters should focus on Biden's four-year record of legislative achievements and his ability to restore America's reputation as a respected global leader.
Despite the concerns raised after the debate, Governor Moore's stance serves as an affirmation of support for President Biden's candidacy. As the election season progresses, it remains to be seen how these debate concerns will impact public perception and support for the Democratic nominee.
