The Louisville Police Department announced that an internal investigation is currently underway regarding the arrest of world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler during the PGA Championship last Friday. Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel stated that any policy violations discovered during the investigation will be dealt with accordingly. The department plans to provide an update on the investigation this Thursday, May 23, 2024.

The incident occurred when John Mills, a security guard working at the tournament, was tragically struck and killed by a bus outside the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club around 5 a.m. on Shelbyville Road. Approximately 90 minutes later, Scheffler approached the club's entrance prior to his second-round tee time.

According to a police report, Detective Bryan Gillis was directing traffic when Scheffler allegedly drove eastbound in an attempt to access the course. When Gillis stopped Scheffler to give instructions, the golfer reportedly refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging the detective to the ground. Gillis sustained injuries to his left wrist and knee, including pain, swelling, and abrasions.

Notably, the detective did not have his bodycam activated during the incident, leaving behind no video evidence. Scheffler was subsequently arrested on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer, which is a felony. However, after being released from custody, he managed to return to the golf course in time for his second round. Scheffler later described the situation as "chaotic" and attributed it to a "big misunderstanding."

The internal investigation initiated by the Louisville Police Department remains ongoing, with Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel asserting that any policy violations uncovered will be addressed according to the department's disciplinary protocol. An additional update on the investigation is expected to be provided on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

Scheffler's arraignment has been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 3. Despite the incident, Scheffler went on to complete all four rounds at the PGA Championship, finishing tied for eighth place. He has since returned to his home in Dallas, Texas, and is scheduled to participate in the PGA Tour's event in Fort Worth this week.

As the internal investigation continues, all parties involved await further updates and clarifications surrounding the circumstances of Scottie Scheffler's arrest.
